About me

I am a morphosyntactic typologist with expertise in argument structure, voice, and valency-changing operations, including antipassive, benefactive, reflexive, and reciprocal constructions. I hold an M.A. in English Philology from the University of Wrocław and a second M.A. in General Linguistics from Lyon 2 University, where I also earned my Ph.D. in 2013. My doctoral dissertation on antipassive constructions in accusative languages received the prestigious Greenberg Award from the Association of Linguistic Typology in 2015.

My research career began with a Ph.D. thesis conducted at Lyon 2 University (2007–2013), in the Dynamique du Langage research laboratory in Lyon, under the supervision of Prof. Denis Creissels. Titre: L’antipassif dans les langues accusativesFollowing my Ph.D., I pursued postdoctoral research at Zurich University (2016–2017), under the mentorship of Prof. Balthasar Bickel. From 2017 to 2020, I joined the ERC project Grammatical Universals at Leipzig University as a postdoctoral researcher, working under the direction of Prof. Martin Haspelmath. Between 2022 and 2024, I served as Principal Investigator of the Polonez Bis 1 project at Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU). Upon completion of the project in 2024, I was appointed to a two-year research position of an Assistant Professor at AMU, without teaching obligations (2024–2026).

I am the co-editor of the volume Reflexive Constructions in the World’s Languages (Janic, Puddu & Haspelmath 2023, Language Science Press), a pioneering volume on reflexives across diverse language families, notable for its use of original data and a unified comparative framework. In addition, I co-edited the first volume on antipassives entitled Antipassive: Typology, Diachrony, and Related Constructions (Janic & Witzlack-Makarevich 2021, John Benjamins), which offers both synchronic and diachronic analyses of antipassives, addressing their formal diversity and functional motivations across languages. Earlier, I co-edited a thematic issue of Lingua Posnaniensis (Janic & Nau 2017) titled Valency-Changing Operations Within and Across Languages, which explores a broad range of constructions affecting verbal valency. I am currently co-editing a volume entitled P-Demotion Alternations Across Languages: Form, Function, and Theoretical Insights, to be published by De Gruyter in 2026.
